Born in Saint Clair, Pennsylvania, Andrew Wapinski is a visual artist whose current practice is rooted in the memories of interacting with the environment of the historic coal mining town in which he grew up. His work explores how our interactions with nature and use of raw material enact change on surrounding environments. The importance of material and process is put forth in his daily studio practice involving anthracite coal, melting blocks of ice as well as the collection and re-use of dust from his reductive painting processes. This is the foundation for Wapinski to investigate interwoven themes of liminal space, reclamation and material significance as they relate to shifting environments and sense of place.
Andrew Wapinski received his BFA in Painting from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania and an MFA in Painting from The University of Delaware. He continues to exhibit nationally with 13 solo exhibitions and extensive participation in group exhibitions and art fairs throughout the U.S. including the Attleboro Arts Museum, Attleboro, MA, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst, IL, University of North Carolina Ashville, Asheville, NC, and the Susquehanna Museum of Art, Harrisburg, PA. His work is collected internationally where it is included in multiple corporate, public and private collections. Andrew Wapinski lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is currently represented by Mark Borghi Fine Art, New York, NY and Callan Contemporary in New Orleans, Louisiana.
