THE LIGHT WITHIN
Callan Contemporary is pleased to present The Light Within, an exhibition of new work by Mitchell Lonas. Continuing the artist’s sustained investigation into perception, materiality, and the phenomenology of light, the exhibition introduces a body of work that expands his distinctive vocabulary of incised aluminum surfaces. For more than a decade, Lonas has developed a practice that occupies a compelling space between painting, sculpture, and optical experience. Working with painted aluminum, he meticulously engraves thousands of linear incisions into the surface. Rather than depicting light, the works receive and activate it, making perception itself an essential component of the work.
The title, The Light Within, suggests that illumination is not something encountered externally alone, but something cultivated through experience, reflection, and endurance. At the center of The Light Within is the recognition that life is seldom defined by moments of certainty, but by continual movement. Lonas understands transformation not as an isolated event but as an enduring condition. Every season leaves its mark; every passage alters the landscape from which the next emerges. The exhibition reflects Lonas’ ongoing interest in the rhythms that govern the natural world and the ways those rhythms find resonance within human experience.
This dynamic relationship between object and observer positions Lonas within a broader lineage of artists concerned with perception and material presence. Yet his practice remains distinctly his own, distinguished by an exceptional command of process and an insistence on craftsmanship. In an era defined by acceleration and distraction, Mitchell Lonas offers an alternative: an invitation to pause, to observe carefully, and to discover that what changes before our eyes may also awaken something enduring within us.
